The Best of NileGuide

Caught on a volcanic paradise with nothing to do? Well, you've come to the right place. Gran Canaria has risen up as an escape for bored, dreary Europeans, and, with its usually rainless summer, has as many things going for it as the supermodel chef painter that sat next to you on the plane. Things to do in Gran Canaria aren't scarce by any means. Start off by exploring the island with the Grand Tour of Gran Canaria. Depart your hotel and head to Ingenio where you will stop at the Museo de Piedra -- an embroidery and Canarian handicraft workshop. Continue the tour to Tedle, Tafira and Crater de Bandama where you will see spectacular views of the crater and the city of Las Palmas. At Valleseco, you will stop for lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to Cueva Corcho, Cruz de Tejeda, Mirador del Fraile and Roque Nublo. Your final stop is in San Bartolome de Tirjana, before traveling through Fataga and returning to your hotel.
Take in some Gran Canaria history by visiting the Casa Museo de Colon. This museum commemorates explorer Christopher Columbus' visit to the islands on his way to "discover" the Americas, as well as the role that the Canary Islands played as a bridge between the New and Old Worlds.
For miles of golden sand, head over to Playa de Maspalomas. This 10km-long stretch of golden beach has been awarded an EU "Blue Flag" in recognition of the quality of the waters, the cleanliness of the beach and the range of facilities on offer. Northern Europeans dream of this place during their long cold winters and come in droves throughout the year. Sand dunes to volcanoes, beaches to sheer cliffs, Gran Canaria has much to offer the intrigued traveler.
