Greensboro Travel Guide

The five institutions of higher learning that make Greensboro their home have largely shaped the culture that distinguishes this city in North Carolina. Forming the third part of the Piedmont Triad, with Winston- Salem and High Point, Greensboro has music, history and sports running through its veins. Music abounds in its Eastern Music Festival, Civil War history in the Greensboro Historical Museum. And a Hoppers baseball game at First Horizon Park is always a good idea, for a relaxing alternative to the big-league scene.

Sights

An edifying way to get acquainted with the local history is a visit to the National Historic Landmark of Blandwood Mansion, former home of North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead. Here you'll see a vast collection of paintings, furniture and silverware. The Guilford Native American Art Gallery and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum are also worth exploring. Kids, too, can also soak up the cultural experience of Greensboro. Take them to the Natural Science Center of Greensboro, the new Animal Discovery Zoological Park or the Greensboro Children's Museum. Kids will appreciate the interactive exhibits and animals. More fun for the young ones and the young once can be had at the Wet 'N' Wild Emerald Pointe theme park. For kayaking and canoeing, head to Lake Brandt, Lake Higgins or Lake Townsend. The Tannenbaum Historic Park, with its colonial museum and open green space, as well as the Bicentennial Garden and David Caldwell Historic Park, with its canopy of trees and interesting sculptures, are also great places to unwind.

Dining

There are more than 500 restaurants in Greensboro and they serve all kinds of cuisine. Places to eat are numerous along the High Point Road area near the Coliseum Complex or the area between Market Street and Friendly Avenue. Or try the Battleground Avenue neighborhood up to North Elm.  There are also a number of good eats in the downtown area and around Randleman Road.

Shopping

Retail isn't a problem in Greensboro, with the boutiques, art galleries and unique shops that line South Elm Street in the downtown area. Three stories of shopping await you at the Four Seasons Town Center. Jewelry, clothing and home furnishings, among others, await you at the Friendly Center. Women will find the shoes and accessories at Footnotes on Stanley Road diverting, while keepsakes and mementos are the focus at Swoozies Greensboro at Friendly Center and at Terra Blue on South Elm.
