Bish World Cuisine

Description:

  • Maurizio strikes again! The culinary wizard behind the deservedly popular daMaurizio in The Brewery market has daringly opened a second high-tone eatery -- practically across the street from his first -- and, against the odds in a tough economic moment, it's already supplanting his original fine-dining establishment as the "in" place. Tucked into a harborside location at the back of the upscale Bishop's Landing development (hence the name -- I think), this place combines Asian and Continental influences to fine effect, much like a hot young chef in Manhattan might do. Exhibit A: appetizers and first courses of mussels in garlic and wine, pulled-pork quesadillas, a tomato-chêvre tart, foie gras with blueberries and cassis, tempura scallops with ponzu sauce, a lobster-corn chowder, and the like. Exhibit B: main courses such as seared Angus medallions and cremini mushrooms, lamb served with mint or curry, Kobe beef burgers, roasted duck with wild cherries and port sauce, sesame-crusted tuna, or a peanutty chicken and shrimp pad Thai. There's also local lobster, of course, here split and garlic-broiled. Finish your meal off with house-made ice creams or sorbets, crème caramel, a rhubarb-ginger crisp, an outstanding peanut brittle sundae, or perhaps a lemon tart. The water views, professional service, and fine bar and wine list only enhance the experience of having temporarily traded in New Scotland for New York. Dress smartly, expect Halifax's finest to be out in force on the weekends, and reserve early in anticipation of that fact.

    Too Casual...

  • Bish used to be consistently superb. This latest incarnation just isn't. It's just too loud, too bustling to enjoy a real dinner. But, as it turns out, that's not really...
