Description:
The city's best Chinese restaurant, Cheelin manages to achieve a seemingly improbable balance between authentic Asian cuisine -- in such normally hard-to-find dishes as mapo tofu (spicy tofu, cubed and stir-fried, often mixed with ground pork or beef) and yu xiang pork (pork with Szechuan sauce, usually made from some combination of ginger, garlic, sesame, vinegar, or fish flavoring) -- and a funkier, Haligonian vibe (from the brightly painted interior and the hip young staff and crowd to dishes such as scallops paired with mango sauce). Despite the low prices, this is definitely not a hole-in-the-wall Chinese eatery. Go for the haddock, the excellent vegetable spring rolls, orange beef, shredded pork with bitter melon, or a daily special such as peppery mala shrimp with sautéed bok choy and squash. They also deliver to the downtown area -- good to know when you're hungry late at night.
