• Located along the newly cool stretch of Grafton Street, Halifax's original vegetarian restaurant (it turns 25 in 2006) has been voted one of the top 10 veggie restaurants in Canada by the Globe and Mail. It's funky and fun, with a certain spare grace inside and a canopy and sidewalk tables for summer lounging. Entrees include lasagna, bean burritos, pesto pasta, veggie burgers, and a macrobiotic rice casserole. There's also "neatloaf" and tofu-and-rice-based "peace burgers" for those who like their food with cute names. The vegan fruit crisp is the dessert to hold out for. They also do takeout; consider a hummus-and-pita picnic atop nearby Citadel Hill.
