The Explora hotel on Rapa Nui, like the other Explora hotels are designed to give maximum comfort and to take advantage of what the local environment has to offer. The hotel is set on a hillside, overlooking the ocean. Appointments in the rooms are top-notch, and the attention is very detailed throughout.
Another detail that really sets the Explora apart is that they've done their homework.They know when other tour agencies will overrun certain oft-visited sites, and will do their best to guide you around them. They'l lead tours of a maximum of 8 passengers, including treks by Rapa Nui guides over some of the island's tougher terrain, some of it exclusive to the hotel.
It might surprise you that at such an excusive hotel, they've chosen to place several guest rooms together in their UFO-looking buildings rather than having them in separate cottages. This follows the credo of sustainability that underlies much of what Explora does. It was recently teh first hotel in Latin America to gain the US LEED sustainability approval. The rooms are high-ceilinged and feature wood and volcanic rock as structural elements.
Meals and drinks are well-reviewed here, considered creative and tasty, though perhaps occasionally limited by the fact that the island is essentially in the middle of nowhere. The hotel itself is well set away from the town of Hanga Roa, and is about a fifteen minute ride away.
