Hanoi nightlife is sedate compared to many places in Asia. The Vietnamese tend to retire and rise early and it shows. There are, however, opportunities to see opera performances or water puppetry shows and some of the better restaurants have 'cultural shows'. Musicians and dancers perform on a regular basis at some of the bigger hotels.
Hanoi locals frequent beer halls with plastic chairs and strange munchies but most foreigners, particularly women, will feel more comfortable in one of the smaller bars. Young people frequent the bars in Bao Khanh but these can be a bit rough and noisy so business travelers and older tourists are more likely to enjoy the Press Club or the R & R Tavern.
Karaoke bars with private rooms, plush sofas and slim attendants provide opportunities for frustrated singers. Nightclubs can be found scattered throughout the city but these cater mainly to locals. The top pick is Apocalypse Now. During weekdays, visitors can play free games of pool, but on weekend nights, all that takes place here is dancing, dancing, and more dancing. This is a late night place designed to recreate the feel of the old bunkers of the Vietnam War.
