Hanoi has beds for everyone. Many of the luxury offerings are around the central area close to Hoan Kiem Lake. This is within walking distance of most visitor attractions and much of the city's business activity. Here the Hotel Sofitel Metropole Hanoi and the Hilton Hanoi Opera reign supreme but there are also mid-range options such as the Zephyr Hotel and the Boss Hotel.
The Old Quarter, north of here, has a huge choice of budget accommodations. Many of these places look somewhat seedy but generally they are safe. You are right in the middle of the action here with local shops and restaurants all around. Fortunately there are also a few mid-market places here also, and these offer good value. Business people and tourists will both find that the Ba Dinh District, which is further out and to the west of the city center, has appeal because it is quieter. You can choose between Hanoi's luxurious Hanoi Daewoo Hotel or comfortable Flower Hotel. Similar offerings are available in the Hai Ba Trung District. Recommendations include the Hotel Nikko Hanoi and the Sunway Hotel Hanoi.
Out at West Lake, the Intercontinental Hanoi West offers five-star luxury while the Somerset West Lake is a somewhat cheaper option. These hotels are still only 3-4 kilometers from central Hanoi but transport can be a problem for some. This area will appeal to some families because it is less crowded and the lake and its surroundings provide things to do.
