The Haro Wine Battle

Description:

  • The Haro Wine Battle on 29 June each year, during the local festival of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, commemorates a battle between Castillians and Navarrese in the Middle Ages. Scores of young people, wearing white, ride in wagons to the top of a hill outside the city where they proceed to drench one another with red wine from squirt guns, sprayers, bottles and buckets. This is followed by a picnic and then everyone rides down to Haro soaked in wine to continue the party in the main square.
