  • Ahh the smell of plantains, seafood, rice, beans and spices of Cuba! The restaurants in Havana can fulfill your need for delicious Cuban and Caribbean fare like no place else. The international influences on Cuban cuisine can best be felt in Havana, the country's most international city---everything from Chinese to Middle Eastern food can be had in Havana's restaurants. The biggest distinction in Cuban restaurants is between tourist-centered restaurants and so-called peso restaurants. Tourist restaurants accept CUCs and offer fare and service to meet the expectations of travelers. Peso restaurants accept only Cuban pesos, and being such, they serve strictly Cuban fare without the frills or more pricey ingredients of their counterparts. Peso restaurants are more authentic, but offer simpler, less exciting fare. Old Havana is home to the most tourist-friendly restaurants. Get a generous helping of traditional Cuban eats at Bodeguita del Medio, famous for celebrity appearances by the likes of Jack Lemmon, Nat King Cole and of course Ernest Hemingway. Centro Havana is chock full of cafes and eateries; encompassing Chinatown, Centro is your best bet for Cuban-Chinese fare. Ritzy Vedado has high-end restaurants will high-rise views, as well as some Cuban favorites, such as Coppelia, serving some of the best ice-cream in the city. The leafy suburb of Miramar offers plenty of good eats as well, especially in the seafood department. Not only is there a plethora of Cuban food but seafood is a major staple as well. The State-run, Don Cangrejo Restaurant gets the first and freshest catches of local seafood each day. Years of ration mean that Cubans are a little meat crazy. For the veggies, or those just craving something a little more healthful, Havana's handful of vegetarian restaurants are an oasis. Veggie-friendly meals can be found at Middle Eastern restaurants such as Al Medina. Or if you want a little down home cooking find your nearest Palador. These home-based restaurants serve up local favorites in the intimate setting of the cooks dining room. Loosen your belts and dive into the culinary traditions of Havana.
