Halemaumau Crater Overlook - Big Island (Hawaii)

  • Description:

    • About 3,000 feet across and 300 feet deep, it is certainly the centerpiece of the Volcanoes National Park. Halemaumau is one the most active crates in the park, and is a short 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the overlook. The overlook is frequently visited by Native Hawaiians who come to show respect to the powerful fire goddess Pele. The area is sacred and visitors are asked to be respectful. Visitors are also asked to be mindful of the endangered Nene geese that frequent the area. These birds should not be approached or fed, and injuring one leads to fines at the very least. -Lottie Tagupa
