Hidden down a back street in the Neuenheim section, this is one of the simplest restaurants in Heidelberg, and its affordable prices make it popular with students. Okay, so it doesn't have tablecloths -- just plain wooden tables -- but it's been packed since 1908, so its cooks must be doing something right. The specialty is Flammkuchen, a regional dish from Alsace. It's like a square pizza with onions and cheese but no tomato sauce. It's a real tasty treat, as are the garlic-studded lamb and the steak served with bubbling mozzarella cheese, spinach, and fried potatoes. Tables are placed outside in summer.
