NileGuide Expert tip:

When visiting the Old Bridge, be sure to touch the statue of the monkey located at the gate on bridge's west side. Touch the mirror for good luck, the mice for fertility, and the monkey's hands to ensure your timely return to Heidelberg.

Description:

In 1786, after centuries of building and re-building multiple wooden bridges that linked the banks of the Neckar River, Elector Karl Theodor ordered that a stone bridge be built, which would be more resistant to weather, flooding and war. Though not completely resilient through the years (this version of the bridge has stood as the gateway to the Old City since 1946, after the 161-year old bridge was destroyed during the last years of the war), this replica of the original is a beautiful structure that pays homage to Heidelberg's history and resiliency. After a visit to the Old City, you may want to travel across the bridge, being sure to look up at the stunning view of the castle, as a way to begin your ascent up to Philosophers' Way. Be sure to snap the most-taken tourist photo in Heidelberg at the bridge's entrance standing next to the famous monkey statue. A1970's replica of a similar statue which stood at the entrance to the bridge before 1689, the monkey holds a mirror up to those passing by, warning visitors to take a good look at themselves before passing through the gate, previously a part of the Old Town wall.
