  • Modern Finnish cuisine is coming into its own. Reindeer, Herring, Pike, and wild-berry sauces are just some of the things that you need to try. One of the best places to enjoy this fare is at the unassuming but cavernous Sea Horse which has been in existence since 1934 and probably has changed little since. Baltic herring with mashed potatoes and beetroot is one of the favourites here. For an up-market experience, the Savoy's airy dining room overlooking the Esplanade gardens is hard to beat. Kosmos is a mid-range option.

The other cuisine that is popular here can be loosely called Eastern European. No doubt this comes from Russian and other influences that Helsinki has experienced over the years. An outstanding restaurant show-casing this cuisine is Bellevue, which has been open since 1911.

Many critics acknowledge that Chez Dominique is the premier restaurant in the city. This serves food which can best be described as a Scandinavian - French mix. Pigeon and boiled lobster are two favorites.

For mid-priced Italian food, Raffaello in the heart of the financial district is a good choice. The restaurant with its red-brick walls is cozy and friendly. Grilled salmon fillet is always a good choice here.
