Olavinlinna Castle

Description:

  • Olavinlinna Castle (or St. Olaf's Castle in English) was built by Danish Knight Erik Axelsson Tott in the late 15th Century. Originally built by the Swedes to protect their Savo region from the Russians, Olavinlinna Castle is the world's northernmost still standing medieval stone fortress. Over its lengthy history, the castle has switched hands several times, from Swedes to Russians. Today the castle houses both the Orthodox Museum and the Castle Museum. Since 1912, the castle has been host to the Savonlinna Opera Festival in the summer.
