    • The Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress was built during periods of Swedish and Russian rule of Finland in the 18th Century. Having been compared to the Fort of Gibraltar, today the Suomenlinna Fortress is one of the biggest dry docks in the world. The Fortress was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and today is home to some 900 Finns. Suomenlinna is actually composed of 8 islands and also houses a Naval Academy. Other facilities in Suomenlinna include several museums, a visitors center, several restaurants and cafes, a hostel and various shops.
