  • Ho Chi Minh City is a fairly unpredictable place, but one thing you can rely upon is being able to find a hotel to suit your budget and taste. There are over 3 million motorbikes in the city, but it often feels as though there are as many hotels. These vary wildly depending on where you go. In many of the outlying districts, the hotels are either seedy or targeted squarely at young Vietnamese couples looking to flee the unwanted attention of the family unit. Foreigners rarely, if ever, go to these places. Instead most international visitors head to one of two areas - downtown or Pham Ngu Lao, both in District 1. The former is where you will find most of the city's growing roster of luxury big names. Lam Son Square is home to the iconic opera house and hotels such as the Park Hyatt, the Continental and the Caravelle - the latter two known the world over for their roles as, respectively, a central character in Graham Greene's novel The Quiet American and a famous meeting point for foreign correspondents during the Vietnam War. Other sterling options in this part of town include international names such as Intercontinental and Sofitel and iconic and historic city landmarks The Rex and The Majestic. Those on a tighter budget will likely head for Pham Ngu Lao where the warren of streets is jammed with good value options. This part of town may be regarded as the backpacker area but many of the hotels have a pretty smart trim untypical of the Southeast Asian banana pancake trail.
