NileGuide Expert tip:
Make sure you make the breakfast buffet here. It is one of the best in the city.
There's often a clamor amongst Saigon's hotels to be known as the war hotel. This iconic fixture has as valid a claim as any to the dubious accolade. Opened in 1959 as the most opulent lodgings in the city at the time, the hotel provided a base for the NBC and CBS bureaus during the war and its bar was a favorite watering hole for correspondents. While it still retains a certain degree of old world tropical charm – especially in its rooftop bar Saigon Saigon – the hotel is very much business orientated these days and the rooms are functional rather than flamboyant. Nevertheless, a fine pool and fitness center up the ante somewhat. Indeed, the hotel remains near the top of the five-star tree by virtue of its commitment to service, its superb restaurant and its prime location on Lam Son Square next door to the Opera House.
