Description:

  • Glenorchy covers a large area including the shopping precincts of Claremont, Moonah and Northgate as well as Glenorchy Central. The name was spelt either Glenarchy or Glenurchy in the early days of settlement and is of Scottish origin. Glenorchy was a stopping place on the original coach road from Hobart to Launceston. It was the terminus of Hobart's longest tram route with double-decker trams running for six miles. The trams operated between 1893 and 1960. The Royal Agricultural Society has its grounds at Elwick and across the Brooker Highway are the Derwent Entertainment Centre, Elwick Racecourse and the SeaCat complex.
