Stanley Prison

• Crime does not pay but many thought it did and ended up behind bars in this 70-year old detention centre. Built before World War II, this high-security prison houses some of Hong Kong's top murderers, gangsters, rapists and drug dealers. These inmates have little chance of escape because, like Alcatraz, the prison is for the most part surrounded by water. To gain freedom, the escapees would have to be either very good swimmers, amphibious, or incredibly lucky. For a slightly macabre insight into the other side of Stanley, walk to the end of Tung Tau Wan Road.
