  • Relax in a swanky cocktail lounge, sample different varietals in a wine bar, or rock out to a live band -- Honolulu has all of the lively nightlife experiences of any large city, but with an added dash of laid-back Hawaiian attitude. Chill out like a local and enjoy the city after dark. Since Hawaii has so much Asian influence infused throughout its culture and cuisine, it probably shouldn't be a surprise that karaoke has risen in popularity in Honolulu. Private rooms are for rental by the hour, and it's entirely BYOB (and BYOF - food). You can sing to your heart's desire, and then some, at Shorebird Restaurant and Beach Bar. For the past 31 years, island residents and tourists alike have flocked to the Shore Bird, making it one of Waikiki's most venerated institutions.

It's possible to get out and have a few drinks without spending a fortune, if you know where to look. Cheaper places to have a drink and still enjoy the Hawaiian atmosphere are the beach bars, which generally have outdoor seating -- and some even have pools and/or Jacuzzis. Check out Hula's Bar and Lei Stand. Happy hour at bars like this is probably the cheapest way to get a couple of drinks in this town.

Beach bars at places like the Moana Surfrider or Royal Hawaiian are another beast entirely. Situated right on the Waikiki sand, places like these are the most romantic and relaxing for a sundowner or a drink or two under the stars. Visit the Mai Tai Bar. Legend has it the Mai Tai was either invented or perfected here. Beautiful views, exceptional service, and a more refined atmosphere make the difference - but you'll pay for it in drink prices, so be prepared.

Theaters such as the historic Hawaii Theatre, which dates back to the 1920s and is on the National Register of Historic Places, are also reliable places for a fun night out in Honolulu. Having undergone extensive renovations since its days as a cinema, the Hawaii Theatre has many top-name shows that tour through, including Broadway musicals, beauty pageants, concerts, and more. You'll never be at a loss for things to do in Honolulu.
