NileGuide Expert tip:
Smile and welcome the aloha. If you're a vegetarian, you will find home fries and a stir fry plate with various veggies and rice. That's it.
Hukilau Cafe is a local Hawaiian favorite. The dishes are exactly that, local and Hawaiian food. The menu consists of stews, sausage, eggs, corn beef hash, potatoes, loco moco, and of course, spam. You get the idea. The food is served on styrofoam plates with plastic forks and spoons. The menu actually brags that you "get the whole" can of Vienna sausage in one meal. Is the picture getting clearer in your head?
But Hukilau has a warm feeling that can only be found in a home style place like this. The waitresses greet everyone with a true big aloha and smile, and they do know most of the people who come in. The walls are lined with football photos, most signed by the local celebrities out of the near by high school. Tourists are welcome and are greeted with the same warm aloha as everyone else, and you will usually see a few on any given day. The food isn't for everyone, especially if you're worried about clogging your arteries but it's a local favorite with a friendly personality.
Movie buffs will appreciate that the cafe's name was used in the Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore film 50 First Dates,
as a poster on the wall boasts. While you're out in Laie you may as well hit the beach- if you're not too full.
