ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel

Description:

  • Makapu'u Beach lies on O'ahu's eastern shore approximately one mile north of Sandy Beach. Lava cliffs and sand dunes complete the setting for this beach, well known for it's high surf. Tourists will find this beach a good place for sunbathing and people watching, but the surf is often too rough for swimming. Facilities and services at Makapu'u include: life guards, picnic tables, phones, showers and restrooms.

Northeasterly trade winds create large surf at this beach throughout the year. In general the summer will bring more opportunity for calm surf and good swimming conditions. Winter conditions create large surf and novices are warned to remain on shore. Strong undercurrents and a dangerous shore break make Makapu'u terrain for expert body surfers and boogie boarders only. (There are no surfboards permitted in the waters of Makapu'u Beach.) Other cautions include the frequent appearance of Portuguese man-of-war. Lifeguards will post warnings if the jellyfish are swarming the waters of Makapu'u Beach.
