If you ask me the Outrigger Reef Hotel in Waikiki will give you the best "Waikiki Experience", sitting poolside with great service after paddling out to the Waikiki breaks to surf that are directly behind the hotel. You can also paddle/walk down to Kaisers/Bowls/Kewalos on the beach as well. The Hawaiian Hilton Village is the most plush, but the first is well more affordable and better view as well.
On the North Shore, it would have to be Turtle Bay Resort. But if you are looking for a more local experience with a residence or vacation home, just look on craigslist for the best options. It really depends on what experience you are searching for. There is so much to do and see, kinda hard to take it all in with a short visit. Aloha

There are no hotels in the Kaneohe area. Bed and Breakfasts, yes.
