Description:

  • If you yearn for soul food plain and simple, make your way over to this little place just southwest of downtown. Chitterlings, clove-scented yams, meatloaf, braised oxtails, and lots of greens are served cafeteria-style to all comers. Owner Craig Joseph's wall of fame, photos of celebrities who have visited the restaurant, and the work of African-American artists adorn the walls of this popular establishment. This neighborhood is part of the Fourth Ward, which includes Freedmen's town, where the newly liberated slaves built their houses shortly after the Civil War. According to local historians, it was one of the most prosperous black communities in the South.
