Ósar Youth Hostel

Description:

• This alluring retreat on Vatnsnes peninsula -- 25 or 30km (16-19 miles) north of the Ring Road, depending which direction you're coming from -- lies close to Hvítserkur and a large seal colony. Though pickup from the Ring Road can be arranged, Ósar is reachable only by car and tends to attract nature lovers who are a tad more sedate than the typical hostel crowd. Guests can stay in the farmhouse or one of three new cabins; the house has more common space and a TV room, while the cabins are a little more private. The nearest market and restaurant is in Hvammstangi, 25 minutes away, but breakfast can be ordered and eaten inside a Mongolian-style yurt. Book well ahead for the summer.
