  • If you're visiting Idaho, you better plan to be active. Almost all of Idaho is centered around the outdoors and outdoor activities. Sure, we have cities and towns, lots of great restaurants and night life, but the real appeal of Idaho is what you can do in the big outdoors. The best thing about active Idahoans is that we come in all varieties. Even the most out of shape, lazy person can find fun outdoor activities. As can the most extreme sports maniacs of all time.

If you like to experience the outdoors in its most natural and apart from civilization, you'll find your peace in the Boise National Forest, Craters of the Moon National Monument, or Bruneau Dunes State Park. These areas are preserved from development, offer many fun activities, and are perfect places to introduce families and children to the outdoors.

Hikers, bikers, and horseback riders will appreciate the Ridge to Rivers trail system, which is just outside Boise. For a different kind of activity, try Boise Hot Air, a balloon company that gives hot air balloon rides around the Boise area.

For a bit more adventure in your activity, try Zip Idaho, a zip line company that takes you on seven different zip line cables through the Payette River area. Or take in the skiing at Bogus Basin Resort.

Idaho is known for its white water, wild rivers. But if the idea of crashing down the rapids scares you a little, as it does me, you have a wide choice of river guide companies to help you out. Consider Middle Fork Wilderness Outfitters or Killgore Adventures for some great river action. ROW Adventures also does river trips, plus their Idaho Superlative Adventure if you want to really go for the big one.
