Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

The volcanic rock is hard, so long pants are recommended.

    Description:

    • Volcanic activity over the past 15,000 years have left an area of eastern Idaho looking much like what one might imagine the surface of the moon to look like. It's rocky, windy, but it's anything but bleak. The porous rock leaves black dirt covering the landscape, covered in a rich variety of vegetation.

Visitors to Craters of the Moon can enjoy the park in a variety of ways. Picnicking, camping, biking, hiking, and especially exploring the numerous tube caves that are everywhere.

It's like no other place you've ever seen.
