• When folks in Boise want to escape the city and relax, they often head to McCall, a mere two hour drive north on Highway 55. And the reason they go to McCall is Ponderosa State Park. Situated on the shores of Payette Lake, this state park provides plenty of ways to have fun. Most people who visit camp at the large campground in the park, although McCall has plenty of hotels, vacation rental homes, condos, and other areas to camp. Swimming, boating, fishing, and relaxing are popular pasttimes in the summer or other moderately warm times of year. In the winter, McCall is the perfect winter playground. Ponderosa has miles of groomed cross country ski and snowshoe trails. Get adventurous and build your own ice shelter for winter camping. For campers who like more secluded and rustic camping, the north beach campground provides just that. Ponderosa is just outside of McCall, so you are never far from restaurants, shopping, and grocery stores.
