  • Description:

    • Feshane is an international fair center at the coast of Haliç. It is founded over an area of 56,000 sqm. Although it is being used as a fair center today, Feshane was initially used as a production center, a factory, in the early 19th century. Feshane was established in 1839 by the Sultan Abdülmecid for the purpose of developing "Fes"s and cloaks. Although not worn anymore "fes" was the typical hat of the Turkish men worn in the 19th century. Feshane is thus the first industrial establishment in the history of Ottoman Sovereign. By 1866, Feshane was already one of the first and most developed, an examplary sewing house/factory of its era. Clothes sewn at Feshane won many prizes over the course of the century. In 1855 at Paris 3. International  Exhibition, in 1863 at an İstanbul Exhibition called the "Sergi-i Umum-i Osmani'' and in 1893 at Chicago International Exhibition, Feshane branded clothes won numerous gold medallions. The establishment has been restored in 1986 -remaining true to its original foundation. Today it is used as a fair center. During the Ramadan, Feshane is also used for celebrations and iftar gatherings.
