Gülhane Parkı

Description:

  • Gülhane Parkı is called "Gülhane" - rose house - because it has once been an external rose garden of the Topkapı Palace. It was through this garden that one would pass into the Palace (at least to one of its entrances). As such, Gülhane Parkı is located next to the Topkapi Palace. It stretches along a tiny hill between the Palace, Çizme Kapısı and Sarayburnu.

The Park carries a lot of historical significance and not just because it was once a Palace Garden. Even before the era of Ottomans, this piece of land was considered sacred and many pavilions were built inside. In fact, when Istanbul was conquered, the conquerers did not stop short at Sarayburnu; but they also took Tiled Pavilion inside the Park. Many other pavilions were also built during the high time of the Park.

The high time of the Park ended when the high time of Topkapı Palace ended. When the Sultans moved out from this Palace to Dolmabahce; Gülhane Park was temporarily forgotten. Gülhane is now a common hang around place among the public. One can also visit its many pavilions when inside.
