The Best of NileGuide
- Jakarta certainly comes alive at night, but be warned - trying to get through the city’s traffic is hard at the best of times let alone on a Friday or Saturday night. However, if you do make it through the traffic there is a lot to do after dark. Ancol, in north Jakarta, is one of the most popular going out districts. You might not equate a mall with the best place for going out but Plaza Indonesia’s Ex Annex is the destination for many of Jakarta’s young rich and beautiful party goers. Bars, clubs and pubs can all be found here. The Hard Rock Café is a lively hangout on the weekends and the staff are very friendly. Local bands and live music often play here. Plaza Senayan is another mall that offers evening entertainment. The Black Cat Jazz Supper Club is home to live jazz and piano music every night apart from Sundays. Happy hour is from 5-7pm. Red Square is Jakarta’s first Russian inspired vodka bar. The bartenders are renowned for putting on a flare show – including juggling vodka bottles with special fire effects. There is also a “show” bar and guests are not averse to dancing on it after one (or two) too many vodkas. If you fancy doing something a little different in the evening head to the Fountain Lounge at the Grand Hyatt. The fountain lounge overlooks the theatrical hotel lobby. If you sit by the window you can see the traffic of Jakarta down below and, of course, the fountain. Have some nibbles (the strawberries dipped in chocolate are delicious), some chilled champagne and a few drinks whilst being serenaded by a live acapella band. Be warned: this is not cheap so do remember to bring your wallet. The lounge is open from 8am to 1am. Jalan Jacksa is a popular backpacker hangout and perfect if you are after a cheaper night and a chilled out atmosphere. There are lots of bars along the street so you wont have any problem locating the local beer – Bintang. Kota is a more seedy area in Jakarta but is home to several clubs and bars (and prostitutes). Stadium, a four-floor club, is a popular hangout and home to some of the best DJs in Jakarta.
