The Best of NileGuide
- Jakarta is well set up for tourists and the range of restaurants available reflects this. From large pizza chains to local cuisine there really is a lot to offer. Head to any of the major malls such as Plaza Senayan, Taman Angrgrek Mall, Plaza Indonesia or the Grand Indonesia and you’ll find a range of fast food joints from around the world. These range from the better-known brands to local alternatives. Pizza, burgers, curry, tacos, sushi – take your pick. The Black Cat Jazz Supper Club in Plaza Senayan is popular and is home to live jazz and piano music every night apart from Sundays. Signature dishes include shrimp creole, blackened steaks and catfish, seafood gumbo and jambalaya. Dinner is served from 5pm to midnight. Street food is very common in Jakarta. Warungs, little street stalls, cook up Indonesian delights and little seats around them offer visitors the perfect opportunity to soak up the atmosphere. However, it is not for the faint hearted (or weak stomached). Food is often served by the roadside and there is little access to running water or refrigeration. That being said, if you have a strong stomach the food is cheap and tasty. Gago-gado (mixed vegetables and fried tofu in a peanut sauce), rendang (beef with a spicy coconut sauce), rica-rica (a spicy pork or chicken dish) and babur ayam (a chicken and rice porridge) are all popular choices from around the Indonesia archipelago. For authentic Indonesia cuisine Bumpu restaurant is considered to be one of the best in the city. It is a little out of town – on the ground floor of the Sheraton Bandara, near the airport and 30km out from the city centre. Soto Madura (a spicy chicken soup with onions and tomatoes), ayam bumbu Bali (Balinese style chicken) and sate are all signature dishes. The Sriwedari Garden Restaurant in the Jakarta Hilton International Hotel is also popular.
