If you will be in Jakarta on that day then you should visit Monas or maybe Ancol.
You will see the amazing independent celebration by the people of Indonesia with many way, there is many games and gift there for the participant.
But for this year our Independence day would be would be held during the fasting month in moslem so I guess the celebration wont be so lively.

Hmm, first of all Jack, are u living in Indonesia?
i'd say the best way to enjoy the august 17th is at your house complex. Usually theres a lot of races hold for the neighborhood. And its all fun and funny, ull see something like eat "kerupuk" competition, jumping on "karung" competition, "bakiak"(somekind of traditional sandal) race, or even dancing and singing competition :)

Aside from a solemn flag raising ceremony at the Istana (which isn't designed to be a mass participation event), there are no parades or such. The cities, towns and villages will be decked out in red and white and there games will be played in villages and schools.
So if you do want to experience the atmosphere, you will need to make arrangements with people either in a housing complex or village (people don't just show up unannounced) for you to be there to soak in the atmosphere or to participate.

Istana Negara, Jakarta. In this place, every year Indonesian government held a ceremony commemorating Indonesian Independence Day. All the government officials including the President will attend and following the solemn ceremony. This activity will also covered by all local television stations, so that all Indonesian people can watch this national ceremony.
But the celebration is not only held in Istana, local people usually make another celebration on their local residents with various ways. And everybody can participate on this...
It would be interesting if you could go and see a formal ceremony at the palace, and began to explore the areas around and saw the events they do in groups.

hi jack, if you are a type of advanturous peson i would suggest you to be sure camera is on in your hands, then go through from jakarta city to the villagae. the rute is start from south jakarta, blak m, then heading to bogor through lebak bulus, pondok cabe, parung and end in bogor. its better for you to ride motor bike or use a rent motor bike together with the rider (its caleed 'ojek' n there are many everywhere in jakarta). by this way you will experience different type n kind of celebration activities/competition. start the traveling from 15:00 a clock onward..
