Description:
Even if the sheer eccentricity of Jake's prevents you from an overnight here, you should absolutely dine here. Part of its allure stems from its raffish charm and unpredictability -- you never know who might show up to divert and entertain you during a meal. (Likely candidates include everyone from Kingston's most prominent doctors to loquacious local philosophers who will predict your future through a rum-induced haze.) Jake's offers two distinctly different dining experiences: a romantic and secluded covered veranda out back, and a much more sociable front porch where tables are hand-painted in psychedelic patterns inspired by the 1960s. Menu items are announced on a chalkboard and may include pumpkin, red bean, or pepper-pot soups; fish tea (a clear broth checkered with herbs); and conch, callaloo, or cod fritters. More substantial fare includes plantain chips or carrot strips served with smoked marlin dip; a marvelous steamed fish in coconut-flavored cream sauce; tender pepper steak; and a revolving array of spicy jerk chicken, beef, pork, and fish.
