Rum is one of Jamaica's most famous exports, and Appleton is the oldest and most famous rum-producing plantation on the island. Since 1749 the plantation has been harvesting sugar cane and mixing legendary rums, which can be tasted during the tour. You'll also learn the history of the estate, visit the distillery, watch rum being aged and blended, taste pressed cane juice, and get a free bottle of rum to take home. Located in rural St. Elizabeth, far from the tourist centers of the island, the estate is nevertheless a worth a half-day trip. The tour takes about one hour, and is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
