Colbeck Castle

Description:

  • This historical site is located two miles from Old Harbour. The English built it shortly after they captured Jamaica from the Spaniards. Estimates as to the exact date of its construction as suggested 1680. Although a castle, it served a double purpose, as it could also be used as a fort. This was necessary, as the English believed that Spain would try to recover the island. Like most buildings of its time it is built primarily of red brick and stone. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) states that the building is built in the Palladio style and is similar in structure to an Italian mansion. This towering structure is estimated to be at least 40 feet high. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust now owns it.
