The Best of NileGuide
- Most visitors to Jerusalem focus their time in and around the Old City just to the east of the downtown area, so that's where you'll find most of the hotels situated. While a number of the luxury 5-star hotels belonging to various hotel chains are within walking distance of the Old City and downtown, none of them are within the walls of the Old City. That's where you'll find the independently run, smaller, cheaper and full-of-character, oriental-style places to stay. Jerusalem also boasts a number of hotel and hostel options run by various Christian denominations--again, most of these are inside or just outside the Old City walls. If you're coming for a conference at the Hebrew University, Hadassah Hospital or an international meeting at the Congress Hall, you'll want to choose a hotel close to those locations, which are on the western side of town, some 15-20 minutes drive from the Old City. Coming to Jerusalem to visit family or friends? Then a good choice would be one of the small hotels scattered through the residential neighborhoods of western Jerusalem like Baka, Rehavia and the German Colony where you'll likely be close to your friends and family. Bear in mind that Jerusalem hotel rates soar during the Passover (late March or April) and Sukkot (September, October) periods.
