Israelis tend to have large families, so it's not surprising that many of the restaurants around the country are more than accommodating to large groups with kids of all ages.
In Jerusalem, where it's possible to eat outside for 9 months of the year, some of the best options for those with small kids who won't be sitting at the table the whole time, will be places like Cafe B'Gina in the family-friendly neighborhood of Baka. Cafe in the Garden, is what this place is called, and there's room for your little ones to get up and roam around inside the walled area. The menu has portions that are large enough for a parent and child to share, and includes favorites like omelets, salads, pasta, sandwiches and great desserts.
Another outdoors option is Cafe Itamar, located in a plant nursery at Moshav Ora on the western edge of Jerusalem. The tables are set amongst the greenery that's for sale, and again, there's plenty of room in a safe setting where you can keep your kids in eye-sight, but they can explore when they get bored with the adult conversation. Itamar serves breakfast all day and has a nice range of milkshakes and ice cream desserts too.
For the hungry meat-eaters--read teens and pre-teens--you may want to head out to Talpiot on the southern side of town to Tzion Hagadol. Here, in an unpretentious but clean and friendly atmosphere, you'll find yourself amongst dozens of families out for good food at reasonable prices. Your table will be grace with a large number of salads and a pile of pita bread before you order your meat, which is freshly grilled to order.
Choose from skewers of beef, turkey, chicken or lamb, or splurge on a steak. French fries or rice accompanies your meal, and no one will bat an eyelid if junior squirts the ketchup or drops a couple of french fries.
Other kid-friendly options in Jerusalem include Fish & Chips in the Machane Yehuda market; Marvad Haksamim in the German Colony, the Asian-Israeli RYU on Emek Refaim for the sushi inclined and Little Italy for good basic pasta, pizza and Italian ices.
