In Jerusalem, romantic restaurants don't necessarily mean expensive, 5 star places. There are some lovely, quiet, intimate restaurants tucked away in courtyards full of character, that are just as romantic as a white-linen, cringe-at-the-bill place.
However, the number one unusual and romantic restaurant choice in Jerusalem is the elegant (non-kosher) Arabesque Restaurant in the American Colony Hotel in eastern Jerusalem. The discreet atmosphere of this hotel where politicians, journalists and probably spies exchange information is very conducive to a romantic experience.
The beautiful Middle Eastern-style furnishings--inlaid mother of pearl and dark wood set off with lush upholstery--and the superb menu of Continental and Arabic food will add to the romantic experience.
At the other end of the culinary and budgetary spectrum is the quaint Tmol Shilshom cafe and vegetarian restaurant just off Zion Square in downtown Jerusalem. Once you've found your way there through the old alleyways and up the stairs, you and your partner can snuggle into a couple of cozy armchairs in the living-room-like space, order a salad or huge sandwich and dessert to share and while away the day.
Another romantic spot on our list is the Lavan Restaurant attached to the Cinematheque, overlooking Mt Zion and the walls of the Old City. An extensive dairy menu and a good wine list complement the beautiful views (try to sit on the balcony) and you can always catch a movie after your meal.
Teenim, one of the city' s best vegetarian restaurants, has a similar view but a different atmosphere. Situated in a villa set in the Yemin Moshe gardens, Teenim is always quiet and the two of you can gaze at the view while you savor your herbal tea and look forward to a romantic walk through the gardens surrounding the restaurant.
