The Best of NileGuide
- Finding things to do near the Western Wall--the kotel is not difficult to do. Your problem will be finding enough time in your itinerary to fit them all in. All of our picks are within a 10 minute walk of the Western Wall and they all complement each other in providing an overview of the thousands of year history of the area. Top pick is the extensive site of the City of David. Here, visitors can walk through extensive archoeological excavations that have revealed layers of life that are documented in the Bible and explain the water source of Jerusalem in ancient times. Be sure to allow at least 3 hours to experience everything. Close by, just inside the Dung Gate entrance that's closest to the Western Wall, is the entrance to the Davidson Center and the Southern Wall excavations. Here you'll be able to explore some of the artifacts found in the City of David as well as to walk through the impressive remains where the southern and western walls of the Temple Mount intersect. Further north into the Moslem Quarter is where you'll find the Kotel Hakatan--the small wall, which is in fact a continuation of the Western Wall that gets millions of visitors every year. At the small wall, you'll have a totally different experience as you stand before the section of the wall that's closest to where the Holy of Holies of the Temple was located. Head back into the Jewish Quarter and up the stairs at the back of the Kotel Plaza to get to the Aish Building and its magnificent rooftop. Best views of the Old City, Temple Mount and Mount of Olives from here.
