The Best of NileGuide
- Jerusalem is a great place to learn about so many different periods of history and so many cultures. Our top pick for educational things to do in Jerusalem is the City of David--one of Israel's largest and most developed national parks and archeological sites. This is THE place to learn about the ancient history of Jerusalem--all the way back to King David's time, and to wander amongst remnants of Canaanite walls and Hezekiah's tunnel. The visitors center at the City of David is state of the art and will ensure that you'll have a fulfilling experience. Next on the list of top educational experiences in Jerusalem is Yad Vashem, the historic museum of the Holocaust. Three or four hours here will bring visitors to a greater understanding of 20th century history of the Jewish people that provides a backdrop to the dramatic creation of the Jewish state in 1948. Self-guided audio tours are the way to go here. The restored Israel Museum not far from the Knesset is number three on the list. Re-opened in 2010, the Israel Museum has galleries on every aspect of life in Israel throughout the ages and you'll emerge with a fuller view of contemporary Israel. For a comprehensive history of Jerusalem, look no further than the Tower of David Museum, just inside Jaffa Gate. Inside the citadel, the permanent exhibits will teach you everything you need to know about Jerusalem's history. While you're there, book tickets for the Night Spectacular, a 45-minute projection on the walls of the inner courtyard of the citadel. Other stops to learn about Jerusalem and the people who have made a mark here are the Begin Heritage Center, the Bible Lands Museum and the Wolfson Museum at the Hechal Shlomo in the center of town.
