  • The Best of NileGuide
  • The best of Jerusalem's parks and gardens make up a green belt around the ancient stones of the Old City. Top of the list is the Kidron Valley, mentioned in the Bible. The natural valley that was once a river bed leading down to the Dead Sea is today filled with olive trees and a meandering trail that provides some very unique views of the Mount of Olives to the east and Mount Moriah, the Temple Mount towering above to the west. The Valley also includes tombs of Zechariah, the sons of Chezir and Absalom--all quite open and accesible. For a completely different type of park experience, head over to Mount Herzl, near Yad Vashem in western Jerusalem. Here, 19th and 20th century Zionist leaders are buried on the hilltop and the surrounding area has been lovingly landscaped into a quiet park, replete with trees and greenery and beautiful vistas. More in the center of town lies Independence Park, site of summer concerts and public events. Some lovely lawns for picnicking and lounging as well as a shrot cut into the center of town make this a popular spot. Gan Sacher--Sacher Park, is another attractive park that's full of Jerusalemites in the spring, summer and autumn. There's a great public exercise apparatus and some good running and walking paths--lots of dog-walkers here too in thi urban space. Slightly out of town is the more uncultivated Sataf site--great for hikes and relaxing. Don't forget to get out to the Haas Promenade too if you're just looking to sit and soak in the view.
