Barood Bar Restaurant

Description:

  • This cozy, authentic little place has real charm and spirit. It offers an always-changing daily menu of home-style choices such as pork spareribs with a rosemary barbecue sauce, or goose breast in an oyster sauce, but the Balkan/Sephardic home-style dishes are the most interesting. Look for leek stew with meat and plums, Sephardi-style stuffed cabbage, or an oven-baked casserole of spicy meatballs with eggplant. There are also interesting appetizers such as pickled quail eggs or pastelikos (tiny breads) filled with meat and pine nuts, eaten with hard-boiled egg and spiced salad. Barood is a great choice for a Friday-night or Saturday-afternoon meal. There's often a party atmosphere late Friday afternoons and Saturday nights (and sometimes live music). The bar serves an amazing range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks and is also a simpatico place for meetings. Despite antismoking laws, the atmosphere is still sometimes nicotine rich; in summer, nonsmokers may want to dine alfresco, in the pleasant Jerusalem Courtyard.
