NileGuide Expert Says:
Descend into the depths of underground Jerusalem to experience a different kind of synagogue.
NileGuide Expert tip:
Call ahead to make sure the museum and synagogue are open.
- This is one of Jerusalem's oldest synagogues in use. The Karaites are a Jewish sect of a few thousand members, who follow biblical customs only, and do not accept the Talmud. The synagogue is hung with dozens of silver oil lamps. The floor is carpeted. Worshipers remove their shoes before entering. Note that the gateposts have the Ten Commandments written there rather than the usual Jewish mezusah. To see the synagogue and learn more about this small Jewish community, ring the bell by the gate.
