Like many metropolises, Johannesburg comes alive at night, but this South African city is particularly lively and vibrant after hours.
One of the oldest types of places in the city is the old beer hall, some of which date back decades. Like many of the beer halls in Germany, the ones here in Jo-Burg are large, fun, and filled with loud people and good food. Live music is also common, especially on weekends. Don't think you'll be able to hear any music after a game night, though cricket and football (soccer) fans will be going wild with either celebration or disappointment.
Another form of entertainment can be found in dinner clubs, where a meal is followed by a show. A number of comedy clubs showcase local comedians, or sit and enjoy traditional African music and/or dancing.
Jo-Burg also has a lively music scene, with artists ranging from hip-hop to pop to jazz emerging and performing at local nightclubs and music venues. Many venues serve as fusion clubs of sorts, playing jazz to an older crowd on a Friday and hosting the latest hip rock band on the next night.
Music may be played, but some venues also focus on displaying the works of local painters and other artists. Particularly in the artsy neighborhood of Melville, where the drinks and cover tend to be a bit cheaper, it's possible to find some impressive displays. Theme nights are also common, where all the employees and patrons get dressed up in costume to make the night a bit more interesting.
In the more well-to-do areas of town, there are more high-end bars and clubs where the cocktails are more fancy and more pricey as well. Top-quality liquor and well-dressed patrons are the name of the game here, although everyone lets their hair down and gets dancing after a couple of drinks.
