  • There are few cities in the world with cuisine as diverse as that of Johannesburg. Not only is there pretty much any kind of food you could imagine, there's lots of it, and at every different price point. Both shoestring and luxury travelers can live and eat it up in this city of flavor.

Not surprisingly, one of the best types of restaurant to visit while you're here is African. Common and uncommon cuisines alike from all across the continent come together in one neighborhood, and sometimes even in one restaurant. While eating in an African restaurant, be prepared for a hint of spice, to eat with your hands, and for a lengthy and languorous meal in a warm family-style atmosphere. A few African restaurants in town (such as Moyo) also capitalize on the tourist trade, offering traditional face painting and shows of traditional African dancing. If you're interested, make it dinner and a show and stay for the entire evening. Or keep it current in one of the inexpensive yet stylish smaller restaurants, like Narina Trogon, where you can get African food with a modern twist.

What else can you eat in Jo-Burg? Twists of fresh made Italian pasta dishes, served with the most authentic Bolognese this side of the Mediterranean. Perfectly molded dim sum dumplings, with steaming hot interiors just waiting to be ripped open. Large and tender steaks marinated for hours and slow-cooked over a hot grill right before your eyes. Creative sushi rolls stuffed full of the day's fresh catch and adorned with spicy sauce and salty uni. And there's German, Portuguese, Greek, Thai, and so many more types of food and restaurant that you could practically eat a different cuisine every night for a month. If you're not afraid to try something new, you might find a new favorite - and there's no better place to be adventurous.
