The Best of NileGuide

Johannesburg is one of the biggest cities in sub-Saharan Africa and indeed the world, has a large and growing economy, and a strong trade in gold and diamonds. It also plays the role of a hub for foreigners coming to visit other parts of southern Africa. As a result, in recent decades hotels geared towards everyone from business travelers to the backpacking safari-bound have flourished in and around Jo-Burg.
For a stay in luxury, there are a few five-star hotels that will serve you well. The Westcliff's terrace and lush gardens are the perfect place for a sundowner cocktail, and the hotel's hillside position is served well by the view from the infinity pool. It has a classic, colonial style, and feels somewhat removed from the beat of the city. The African Pride hotel is part of the Melrose Arch mall and has a completely different feel, with ultra-modern architecture and decor. Both are the epitome of comfort.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are many choices for hostels and backpacker hotels that serve those with a very sparse budget. While rooms are small and sparse in hostels like Accoustix, it's more than made up for by the chance to meet and get words of advice from other travelers hailing all over the world and experiencing the nightly African drum jam sessions. More lower-end spots in and out of the city serve travelers well who are just passing through on the way to other cities or game parks.
Then there is a whole range of accommodations in between. The homey comfort of the Rutland House bed and breakfast makes places like this a relatively inexpensive way to have a clean and quiet place to return to at the end of a day of sightseeing. Near the airport and downtown, there are plenty of sparsely decorated but clean hotels with all the amenities designed to cater to travelers who are just in town for a night or weekend on business.
