• South Africa's only city accommodations to be featured in Design Hotels, this tranquil urban retreat is something of a Jo'burg legend, with a reputation that has as much to do with its funky restaurant, Sides, as it does with the fact that this was the city's first boutique hotel. Guest rooms are each individually crafted by a mix of designers, architects, fashion gurus, couturiers, and artists -- their assignment was to give their own twist on a contemporary ethno-African design. The results are a mixed bag; your personal taste will determine your affection for a particular suite, but all are spacious (each with its own balcony) and extremely comfortable, with big showers that turn into steam rooms at the push of a button. Strangely, despite its relative proximity to a great deal of action (Rosebank Mall, Melville, Parkhurst, and the CBD), Bompas offers a touch more tranquillity than Fairlawns (thanks to its size: only 10 suites), and there's no chance of conference delegates intruding on your stay. That said, the place is a justifiably popular dining venue, so the vibe picks up around mealtimes. Service is pretty laid-back; you can expect baby champagne in your room after arrival, complimentary liquor in your minibar, and plenty of peace and quiet.
