Truly terrific food in a unique location. The best food stop for miles in any direction.

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

Eat outdoors to enjoy the view of Mono Lake. Catch quality regional musical talent on weekend nights.

    Description:

    • You will not believe you're deliberately making a destination stop at a gas station mini-mart for food, but this should be on anyone's itinerary who is cruising 395 or going through Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows.  Tioga Toumy's Whoa Nelli Deli (locally refered to as 'the Mobil') has become a famed institution for many good reasons.  First is its surprise setting: in a generic gas station, in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, near a vast salt lake.  Second is the ambiance: lots of picnic tables, a green lawn that's a relief from the miles of sagebrush, regular live music, an excited atmosphere of visitors from around the world and happy locals, topped off with a glorious view of the Mono Basin.  And the food is the reason for it all: lobster taquitos, buffalo meatloaf, Angus beef burgers, a range of killer pizza, good salads and the ultimate fish tacos.  It's great for vegetarians and there's a good selection of beer and wine.
